POPUP BOOK
2019
Tools :
RenderMan | Maya
About the Project:
The goal of this project was to create a popup book scene in Maya using Pixar's RenderMan.
I went to Japan during the summer of 2018 and I thought it was one of the most beautiful places I have ever been to. There was so much culture and many iconic aspects. I wanted to create a project inspired by the beauty and grace that I experienced in Japan.
I challenged myself to create an animation sequence that was reminiscent of the nature of Japan. I also incorporated a mood change within the room from night to day.
My Contributions:
I am responsible for all aspects of this project.
Challenges:
The biggest challenge I faced was animating the lights in the cherry blossom trees. At first, I animated them individually, but later I created a script to select the lights and make them flicker randomly.
Occlusion Pass
References and Inspirations:
I physically crafted a rough version of what I wanted when modeling my popup book in Maya. I used paper, tape, and a sketchbook to create an idea of what it may look like.
Mood Board
Final Thoughts:
I thoroughly enjoyed using Pixar lights to incorporate different moods, and animating some models to make the book come to life. Using the "cookie cutter" technique to model the majority of this scene was very beneficial for me because I could create more assets without actually modeling anything.
